Our Year at a Glance
In alignment with the school's mission, my goal is to promote the spiritual, academic, physical and social development of each child. Included are highlights of what to expect in my classes. In religion, students will learn to recognize God in their lives especially through those they love. They will focus on how to be Jesus for others and practice their faith by studying the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes. They will look to scripture/Bible stories and the saints for their examples, and they will learn a variety of types of prayer. In reading, students will read stories from their Treasures text and leveled readers to enhance their comprehension, fluency, vocabulary and word skills, and writing. Later in the year, we will read Frindle by Andrew Clements together as a class. One book report will be assigned each trimester. In math, students will learn concepts, vocabulary, and problem solving skills. My goal for them is to understand concepts so well that they are able to explain and write how they get their answers. I would like them to be able to make connections between math and their everyday lives. It is critical that parents work at home with their children to practice basic math facts, as we will be having timed tests. SMART board technology and manipulatives will be used in the classroom. We will focus on place value, addition, subtraction, review of basic multiplication and division facts, two digit multiplication, long division, fractions, measurement, and problem solving. Patterns and sequences will also be covered. In English, we will study sentences, nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, and adverbs. In addition, we will learn to write personal narrative, persuasive, comparative, and expository pieces. One spelling lesson will be covered each week. We will study various concepts in life, earth, and physical sciences this year. To ensure understanding, we will conduct experiments. Our social studies class will explore the United States. We will study its history, government, landscape, and economy. Students will be tested on fifty states and capitals. Finally, cursive handwriting will be practiced almost daily.
